Paper Cuttings |
Paper cutting is widely practiced throughout China, but residents of Shaanxi province are particularly fond of the art. Not only are the paper cuttings themselves viewed as merry decorations, the act of creating them is viewed as an art form and a celebratory activity, and is most often done around weddings and Spring Festival. The cuttings can be likened to extremely ornate paper dolls, and often depict symbols of luck, prosperity and happiness. |

Tang Pottery Replicas |
Animal figurines, plates, teacups and vases molded, glazed and fired in the Tang style remind us that Xi'an was the nation's capital during the Tang Dynasty
Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907)
Site of Capital: Xi'an (then called Chang'an)
China's first golden age. The Silk Road turned Chang'an into the world's greatest metropolis. The arts flourished: poetry reached its greatest heights. Buddhism enjoyed great favor – some of China's greatest religious art dates from this time. From the mid-8th century, rebellion weakened the dynasty and finally ended it. [ Dynasties ]
Do not believe any merchant claiming to sell the real thing: Tang originals would be around 1300 years old, and therefore priceless. The replicas, however, are no less pretty for being recently produced. Glazed in yellow, green and white or yellow, green and brown, these pieces are often referred to as "Tang tri-color ceramics".
